Dr. Elizabeth Wanstall

Doctoral Associate

Dr. Elizabeth Wanstall is a Doctoral Associate at Whole Kids Health. She will be completing her residency in Pediatric Health Psychology at the IWK Health Centre in September 2023.

Experience

Dr. Wanstall is a highly skilled clinician who works with children, youth, and parents dealing with various mental health concerns. She has extensive expertise in providing comprehensive therapy and assessments to young individuals with anxiety, depression, trauma, learning and attention difficulties, and other neurodevelopmental conditions. As a fluent bilingual in English and French, Dr. Wanstall is passionately committed to offering psychological services to the Franco-Ontario community and has provided therapy and assessment in French. She also has experience and training in pediatric Health Psychology and Neuropsychology.

Dr. Wanstall is skilled at addressing the intersection of mental health and physical health challenges in children and youth. She effectively supports young individuals in coping with physical symptoms, chronic pain, procedural fears, and neurological concerns like cerebral palsy and stroke. She is also knowledgeable about helping children cope with acute or chronic illnesses like childhood cancer and allergies. In her role, Dr. Wanstall frequently offers consultation to medical professionals, allied health professionals, and educational staff to ensure the best support for children and families.

Clinical Approach

Dr. Wanstall is a client-centered and evidence-based clinician. She approaches care from a biopsychosocial perspective, which aims to understand and consider all relevant aspects of children’s lives to best support their well-being. Dr. Wanstall prioritizes adopting a developmental lens in her work, that understands and values the unique needs and strengths of children and youth. Dr. Wanstall is trained in Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT), Acceptance and Commitment Therapy (ACT), Dialectical Behaviour Therapy (DBT), Parent-Child Interaction Therapy (PCIT), and behavioural approaches. Dr. Wanstall strives to create a safe and collaborative environment for her clients, helping them achieve their therapeutic goals.

Background & Training

Dr. Wanstall completed her Masters and is currently completing her Doctoral studies in Clinical-Developmental Psychology (Clinical Neuropsychology) at York University. She received training in pediatric Clinical, Health and Neuropsychology through her experiences at the York University Psychology Clinic, Toronto Western Hospital (Tourette Syndrome Neurodevelopmental Clinic), the Centre for Addiction and Mental Health (CAMH), and in private practice.

Education & Mentorship

In addition to her dedication for providing clinical care to children and families,Dr. Wanstall is passionate about education and supervision. Dr. Wanstall has extensive experience in the field of education, having completed her B.Ed. in French Immersion teaching. Over the past several years, she has worked as an undergraduate course director in the Psychology department at Glendon College, York University. She has experience providing supervision and mentorship to students in psychology, both in the context of clinical work and research.
