Dr. Maria Khan is a skilled clinician dedicated to providing warm and compassionate care for children, adolescents, and families. With a diverse range of experience, Dr. Maria offers support for children and adolescents with various challenges, including parent-child difficulties, low mood, attention difficulties, trauma-related issues, anxiety, learning difficulties, and emotional and behavioural issues.

Dr. Maria provides assessment, consultation and treatment to children, adolescents, and families. Her commitment frequently extends beyond the individual and she actively collaborates with parents, educators, and other professionals involved to better support individuals in and across their various systems (e.g., school, home, community, etc.).

Clinical Approach

Dr. Maria approaches assessment and treatment from an evidence-based framework, in which biopsychosocial conceptualization and comprehensive formulations are emphasized. She has been trained in different types of treatment including Cognitive Behavioural Therapy (CBT) as well as Psychodynamic, Relational, Emotion-Focused, and Attachment-based approaches. Considering the crucial importance of the dyadic relationship between caregivers and children, particularly during the early years, Dr. Maria offers comprehensive caregiving support while using dyadic play approaches such as Watch, Wait, and Wonder.

Dr. Maria is known for cultivating a safe, empathic, accepting, and non-judgemental therapeutic space in which children, adolescents, and families feel supported and empowered. She adopts an interpersonal and trauma-informed approach to care.

Background & Training

Dr. Maria earned her master’s degree in School and Clinical Child Psychology at the University of Alberta. She completed her Ph.D. at the University of Toronto/OISE. She recently completed her residency at SickKids Centre for Community Mental Health. Dr. Maria has also received training at North York General Hospital, Boomerang Health, powered by SickKids, and the OISE Psychology Clinic.
